Perrelet traces its name to Abraham-Louis Perrelet, a watchmaker from Le Locle who in 1777 developed the self-winding mechanism — an oscillating weight that wound the mainspring from the motion of the wearer's body, the founding principle behind every automatic watch made since. Perrelet's invention was significant enough that his contemporary Abraham-Louis Breguet studied and built on the design, and Perrelet's grandson, Louis-Frédéric Perrelet, went on to become watchmaker to the Kings of France. The modern Perrelet brand was relaunched in 1995 with the Double Rotor, a direct homage to the founder's invention — a second oscillating weight visible on the dial itself — followed in 2009 by the Turbine, whose twelve spinning titanium blades became the brand's contemporary signature.
