Cuervo y Sobrinos traces its roots to 1862, when Ramón Fernández Cuervo, an immigrant from Asturias, Spain, opened a jewellery store in Havana. In 1882, joined by his nephews ("sobrinos"), he formally established Cuervo y Sobrinos, which grew into Havana's most prestigious watch and jewellery house — a fixture visited by Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Ernest Hemingway during the city's golden age. The company opened its own watchmaking workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in 1928, and continued producing under the Cuervo y Sobrinos name until the Cuban revolution led to nationalisation in 1960. The brand lay dormant for decades before being relaunched in 2001, and today is based in Switzerland while its designs continue to draw directly on Havana's Art Deco and colonial-era heritage.
