Dodane was founded in 1857 by Alphonse Dodane and his father-in-law François-Xavier Joubert in La Rasse, a village on the French-Swiss border, making it one of the oldest watch manufactures in France. The company relocated to Besançon in 1929 and became the principal supplier of onboard aviation chronographs to the French Air Force, developing the Type 20 and Type 21 chronographs to strict military specifications — accuracy within eight seconds a day, at least 35 hours of power reserve, and a flyback function for fighter pilots. Around 5,000 of these military chronographs were produced between 1954 and 1994, distributed under the Dodane name and several allied brands, before the original company closed. Cédric Dodane, a descendant of the founding family, revived the house as Dodane 1857 in the early 2000s, continuing the Type 21 tradition with modern movements.
