Nivada Grenchen was founded in 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Otto Wüllimann, Hermann Schindler and Jakob Schneider, and spent its first decades building a reputation as a maker of durable, functional tool watches for pilots, divers and explorers. Its 1950 Antarctic model was put to genuine field use, and the brand's later Depthmaster, launched in 1965, offered a then-unprecedented 1,000-metre water resistance rating. The quartz crisis of the 1970s forced the closure of Nivada Grenchen's Swiss production facilities, and the brand largely disappeared from the market for four decades before French entrepreneurs Guillaume Laidet and Rémi Chabrat relaunched it in 2018, rebuilding the collection around faithful reissues of the Antarctic, Chronomaster and Depthmaster.
