Pierre Jaquet-Droz was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1721 and became one of the most celebrated automaton makers in eighteenth-century Europe, producing mechanical figures capable of drawing, writing, and playing music that were presented to the courts of Louis XV, Charles III of Spain, and the Emperor of China. The watches he built alongside those automata were equally remarkable, featuring enamel dials, miniature paintings and complications that demonstrated complete mastery of the mechanical arts at a moment when watchmaking and fine art were not yet understood as separate disciplines.
